What is hemodialysis?
It is a technique that replaces the main functions of the kidney by passing the blood through a filter where it is purified and returned to the patient free of impurities.
When does the treatment start?
In stage 5 or chronic renal failure.
How does it keep me healthy?
- Eliminates waste, salt and excess water to prevent them from accumulating in the blood.
- Maintains an adequate concentration of certain chemicals in the blood.
- Contributes to regulate blood pressure.
How does hemodialysis work?
A hemodialysis machine has a special filter called a dialyzer or artificial kidney, which cleans the blood.
Fistula: is performed by joining an artery to a nearby vein under the skin to create a larger blood vessel.
Graft: an artery is attached to a nearby vein with a small, soft, synthetic tube that is placed under the skin.
Catheter: inserted into a large vein in the neck or chest. It is used when dialysis is required for a short period of time.
How long does each treatment take?
Hemodialysis is usually done three times a week, and each session lasts approximately three to four hours.
Diet, care and lifestyle
As a renal patient it is very important that you have a balanced diet because it improves your quality of life, will allow a better outcome of hemodialysis, and in case you are a candidate for a transplant, it will help your body to be prepared.
