Preventive medical evaluation What is it? And what is it for?
If prevention is preventing something from appearing or occurring, then what is preventive medicine? The part of medicine that tries to keep a person healthy, i.e., to keep him or her from getting sick .
But there are 3 types of prevention:
- Primary prevention is when we promote a healthy lifestyle: eating healthy, exercising, avoiding sleep loss, reducing stress. (health education, healthy nutrition, sleeping well, no addictions, etc.)
- We apply secondary prevention when we already have a problem or a disease and we try to prevent it from becoming more complicated; that is, when we keep the situation that afflicts that person under control and, having already established the problem (because we did not carry out primary prevention or it was not enough), we have to prevent another major consequence. The goal now is to maintain an acceptable health condition, to prolong the patient's life as long as possible while maintaining a good quality of life.
- We can speak of tertiary prevention when we have the problem established but, in addition, there is a risk of affecting other organs, structures or body systems if measures are not taken to counteract these possible complications.
An example at all three levels: if we do not carry out primary prevention (we will deal with these aspects in future issues), and the person develops obesity, hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, dyslipidemia (high cholesterol or triglycerides), etc. In other words, we already have the problem, now we have to prescribe medications and the correct use of them, lifestyle changes to prevent the patient from developing kidney failure, a stroke, a heart attack or other complications. However, if the patient has already had, for example, a stroke and is bedridden, it is now necessary to prevent bedsores or decubitus ulcers (ulcerated lesions or rotten tissue), which are caused by the continuous rubbing of the mattress against surfaces or bony projections such as elbows, coccyx region, hips, ankles, etc. in patients who remain lying in the same position because, due to the injury they have, they cannot move or move to another place or even in the same bed.
For all of the above reasons, the most important thing is to carry out primary prevention and thus avoid, as far as possible, the appearance of later disorders or diseases.
Many times we do not realize that something is wrong with us. In fact, diseases such as diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, hypothyroidism, hypertension and many others generally do not produce symptoms and this causes damage to internal organs and structures and we do not know that this is happening in our body until we have a heart attack or stroke. That is why we often hear people say that this or that person was feeling fine, and “look what he/she got” without knowing that he/she had not been well for some time, but since he/she did not feel anything, he/she did not go to the doctor.
