Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery

Obesity is catalogued as the epidemic of the new century, because it not only brings psychological and aesthetic problems, but also causes several serious diseases such as Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, Fatty Liver, Dyslipidemia (due to elevated cholesterol and triglycerides), Pulmonary Embolism, Coronary Heart Disease, Heart Failure, Infertility, Arthritis, greater probability of Breast, Endometrial and Colon Cancer, among other diseases.
The best method to achieve effective weight reduction in patients with obesity and associated diseases is Bariatric Surgery.

What results are obtained?
During the first six months it is possible to lose between 3 and 6 kilos per month, depending on the initial weight. Subsequently, the reduction will be slower until it stabilizes.

It is important to highlight that surgical treatment is complemented with nutritional and psychological control and a permanent exercise plan. Surgery is not magic and although it is a significant milestone, it is just as important to be monitored by the interdisciplinary team.
The interdisciplinary team is made up of specialists in physical therapy, psychology, nutrition and endocrinology, endoscopy, cardiology and pulmonology, who together with the surgeon and anesthesiologist accompany the patient throughout the entire course of the comprehensive treatment of overweight and obesity.

Is bariatric surgery right for you?
Bariatric surgery is a safe option for the treatment of severe obesity.
HOMS bariatric surgeons perform a variety of minimally invasive surgeries that result in reduced gastric capacity, as well as reduced fat and nutrient absorption.
Surgical treatment of obesity is indicated for patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 kg/m2 or when it is 35 kg/m2 associated with diseases such as insulin resistance, diabetes, arterial hypertension, fatty liver, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, joint diseases, among others.
The most commonly used techniques are Gastric Bypass and Sleeve Gastrectomy, both performed by laparoscopic or robotic approach in a safe hospital environment equipped with the latest technology and the highest standards of medical quality in the Dominican Republic.

Metabolic Surgery
It is one of the most innovative and effective surgeries that we perform in our center. Metabolic or diabetes surgery shows highly satisfactory results in patients suffering from type 2 diabetes who are not necessarily obese, allowing them to completely abandon their medication and prevent the appearance of any type of associated disease, even causing in diabetic patients the regeneration of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas (incretin effect).
To be a candidate for bariatric surgery, you must meet the following criteria:
- Have chronic obesity with a BMI > 40 or 35 with medical problems associated with obesity.
- Have tried to lose weight without surgery and failed to achieve your goal.
- Not having any medical condition that limits a good evolution.

The effect of these products is to complete their medication and prevent the appearance of any type of associated disease, even provoking in diabetic patients the regeneration of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas (incretin effect).

Why are we the best choice?
At HOMS the patient has the possibility, through the Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Center, to count on the best interdisciplinary team for the integral management of obesity and overweight, which is at your disposal to achieve the goal of taking off weight and thus, regain their health.
The bariatric and metabolic surgery team at HOMS is made up of highly qualified and experienced surgeons, specialized in advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgery techniques, trained in the Dominican Republic with diplomas and sub-specialties in the United States, Chile and Brazil.
Procedures performed
Sleeve gastrectomy
It consists of decreasing the stomach capacity from a normal average (1,500 ml) to 150 ml. It is performed laparoscopically or robotically and achieves a 90% reduction of excess weight at 12 months. It requires a short hospitalization and allows a quick return to work.
Duodenal Switch (SIPS)
It is a technically more complex operation that is performed laparoscopically or robotically. First, a vertical gastrectomy or gastric sleeve (restrictive technique) is performed, creating a tube or sleeve with a capacity of approximately 100 cc.
Secondly, a bilio-pancreatic bypass (malabsorptive technique) is performed, which shortens the length of the intestine, limiting the assimilation of fat from food.
Adjustable Gastric Band
The adjustable gastric band is a device that is placed at the esophagogastric junction by laparoscopy or by robot. It has a silicone balloon placed in the abdominal wall fixed to the muscle under the skin, which is inflated by injecting sterile saline solution percutaneously by your surgeon causing a controlled restrictive effect, thus gradually decreasing the patient’s gastric tolerance. Weight loss occurs because the patient becomes satiated more quickly. With this surgical treatment method, the patient can lose 60-68% of excess weight in 2 years.
