Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago performs first robotic-assisted left colectomy
- The HOMS pioneer in the Dominican Republic in surgical interventions with robotics, is internationally certified by Accreditation Canada (ACI) as a guarantee of safety and quality of care.
- This is the eighth case of colon cancer, the previous seven were for cancer of the right colon.
At the Hospital Metropolitano de Santiago (HOMS), the first robot-assisted left colectomy was performed with the Da Vinci Xi system, the most advanced and innovative surgical equipment in the world, which is used for numerous specialties, such as urology, digestive and general surgery, obesity and diabetes surgery, abdominal hernias, gastroesophageal reflux and oncological surgery.
The procedure was performed by digestive, bariatric and robotic surgeon Héctor Sánchez Navarro, together with Dr. Robert Liriano and Dr. James Hamilton, director of innovation and quality of robotic and metabolic surgery at HOMS.
Sánchez Navarro, who is the only Dominican robotic bariatric surgeon accredited as a doctor of excellence, recommends the population to have regular check-ups with their doctors for colon cancer screening, as well as gastric and esophageal cancer, since they are very frequent.
“With the surgical intervention of this descending colon adenocarcinoma, HOMS opened the oncological robotic surgery service to respond to the scourge of this cancer, which has such a high incidence in the population,” said Sánchez Navarro, who is also director of the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute Meta Íntegra of HOMS.
This is the eighth case of colon cancer in this robotic surgery project at HOMS; the seven previous cases were for cancer of the right colon.
HOMS has been a pioneer in robotic surgery for a decade, making this state-of-the-art technology available to all patients, positioning itself at the forefront of modern medicine. It is internationally certified by Accreditation Canada (ACI) as a guarantee of safety and quality of care.
