The HOMS Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will double its capacity to care for more newborns with the remodeling that is underway. This expansion will increase the number of incubators from 3 to 15 and will make it possible to better cope with the birth of low birth weight infants, who require more care and longer hospital stays.

In Santiago, with a high birth rate, HOMS attends more than 2,000 births a year, with the highest guarantees of quality and safety, although every day we have more and more low birth weight babies and some born with intrauterine growth retardation.

According to specialists, the increase in low birth weight babies is determined by a series of factors including maternal stress, hypertension, chronic diseases and inadequate maternal nutrition.

At HOMS there are currently 12 positions in the Neonatal ICU. With this expansion, we now have 19 positions, with 15 incubators and 4 thermal cribs. Likewise, the healthy newborn area now has 18 to 33 cubicles.

These works have been carried out with an investment budget of RD$ 9,281,406. Investing in new electromedical equipment, including monitoring and respirators. Structural improvements were also introduced, such as the replacement of the air conditioning system with absolute filters.

This work will be definitively completed on September 30 with the start-up of this unit.
